Cigar Consulting.
Independent cigar consulting from a thirty-three-year industry veteran living in the cigar capital of the world. Strategy, blend, manufacturing, FDA, packaging, distribution — the full work between a brand idea and a finished cigar on a shelf. Done by someone who has been on every side of the trade.
What cigar consulting actually covers.
A cigar consultant is useful for any of the work between "I have a brand idea" and "the cigar is on a retailer's shelf." That covers a much wider surface than most clients expect. The Cigar Mule's consulting engagements typically span:
- Brand strategy & positioning. Audience, price point, voice, dress, story. The decisions that determine whether the cigar gets onto shelves and stays there.
- Blend selection or design. Pick from twenty perfected house blends or design from the leaf up. More on cigar blending →
- Vitola, wrapper, and spec selection. Aligned to your audience and price ladder, not the consultant's personal taste.
- Manufacturer pairing. Three Nicaragua partner factories with different strengths. Pairing the right one to your project is its own discipline.
- Bands, boxes, and dress. Design coordination with your art team or ours. Production through trusted partners.
- FDA compliance and import. Paperwork the legal cigar industry can't skip. We file it.
- Distribution strategy. Direct retail, partner-warehouse distribution, DTC, or a hybrid. Sized to your run and your audience.
- Marketing positioning. Launch deck, retailer pitch, brand voice, photography brief.
Why independent matters.
Most "cigar consultants" are factory salespeople in disguise. They route every project to the same one or two factories regardless of fit, because that's where their commission lives. The Cigar Mule operates differently: we have working relationships with three of Nicaragua's premier cigar factories and pair each project with the one whose strengths actually fit. If your project would be better served by a factory we don't partner with, we'll tell you that on the discovery call instead of forcing the round peg.
Independent consulting also means we'll talk you out of projects we don't think will work. We don't bill for that conversation. The most expensive thing in this trade is a 10,000-cigar run that doesn't sell.
Two engagement tracks.
The Retailer Trip — house cigar consulting
For cigar shops and lounges launching their first private-label cigar. Focused, fast, lower-stakes. Discovery call → blend selection (or simple custom design) → bands and box → 12-week delivery to the warehouse you choose. Detail →
The Brand Builder Trip — full-service brand consulting
For founders launching a national cigar brand or new line. Full-service. Strategy + blend + manufacturing + branding + marketing + import + optional national distribution. Detail →
Both are offered in two engagement modes — entirely Virtually (video + email + sample shipments) or Onsite in Nicaragua (5-6 days at the partner factories, hosted personally). The Nicaragua trip is recommended but never required; both modes deliver the same finished cigar in the same 12-week timeline.
Hourly & advisory engagements.
Some clients don't need a full project — they need an experienced second opinion. We offer hourly cigar consulting for:
- Existing brands evaluating a manufacturer change
- Retailers reviewing a private-label proposal from another factory
- Investors doing due diligence on a cigar company
- New founders pressure-testing their economics before committing capital
- Existing brands debugging a blend that "got worse" between trial and production runs
Engagement starts with a free 1-hour discovery call to figure out whether hourly advisory or a project engagement fits the situation.
About The Mule.
Joe — known to clients as The Mule — has 33 years in the cigar industry. Started behind the counter as a retailer (learned what cigar customers actually buy versus what cigar magazines tell them to want). Worked as a brand representative for several brands (learned the supply side: what factories say versus what they actually deliver). Crossed into consulting (learned that the work most brand owners need is wildly different from what the industry sells). Moved to Estelí, Nicaragua full-time in 2017 to make cigars on the ground.
Most cigar consultants visit Nicaragua a few times a year. Joe lives there. The difference shows up in every detail of every project — the factory choice, the leaf source, the realistic timeline, the door you can knock on when something needs fixing. Full founder bio →
