The two tracks.
What's the difference between The Retailer Trip and The Brand Builder Trip?
The Retailer Trip is for cigar shops and lounges launching their own private-label cigar — picking from 20 perfected house blends or designing one from scratch, with bands and packaging finalized through the engagement. The Brand Builder Trip is for founders launching a national cigar brand or new line — same cigar work plus branding, marketing, import-to-warehouse, and optional nationwide distribution. The two trip types are never combined on the same departure. Retailer Trip detail → · Brand Builder Trip detail →
I already have a brand. Can you just add a new line?
Yes. The Brand Builder Trip works equally well for existing brands launching a new SKU. The branding/marketing portion can be scaled down accordingly.
The two modes.
Do I have to come to Nicaragua to work with The Cigar Mule?
No. Every engagement is offered in two modes — Virtual Build (entirely over video and email, with sample cigars shipped to you for tasting) and Onsite in Nicaragua (recommended). Both modes deliver the same finished cigar, bands, and packaging in the same 12-week timeline. The Nicaragua trip is recommended because we move faster and connect deeper in person, but it is never required.
What's the difference in cost between the virtual build and the onsite trip?
The virtual build skips the trip line entirely — lodging, meals, transfers, hosting are not part of the project. Cigar manufacturing, bands, and packaging cost the same. The onsite trip is its own line item, with per-person cost dropping meaningfully when seats are shared with other clients on the same departure.
Manufacturing & specs.
What's the minimum order for a private-label cigar run?
500 cigars per blend. Larger runs are common and have meaningful per-cigar savings.
How long does it take to receive my private-label cigars?
About 12 weeks from a finalized blend. The 12 weeks is driven by minimum aging time we recommend — not delay. Cigars are then imported direct to a warehouse you choose.
What wrappers are available for private-label cigars in Nicaragua?
Habano, Habano Rosado, Connecticut Shade, Connecticut Broadleaf, Sumatra, and Maduro wrappers are all available across our partner factories in 2026.
What's the difference between private label and white label cigars?
In adjacent industries: white label means a generic, off-the-shelf product re-branded for a buyer (same blend everyone else gets, with your name on it). Private label means a buyer-specific product (your blend, your spec, exclusive to you). The Cigar Mule does private label by default. Read the full private-label guide →
Can I really just pick from existing blends?
Yes — and most retailers do exactly that, at least for their first run. The twenty Mule house blends span mild to full and simple to complex. Pick one and we put your band on it.
Do you handle FDA filings?
Yes — we file the paperwork required to import premium cigars into the US. On Brand Builder engagements this is included end-to-end. On Retailer engagements you can either inherit the same handling or take delivery and handle filings independently.
What does distribution look like?
Optional. Our partner warehouse can ship your cigars to retailers nationwide, or you can take delivery at your own warehouse and distribute yourself.
Pricing & scope.
How much does it cost to launch a private-label cigar?
Pricing is custom per engagement and depends on the blend, vitola, run size, packaging complexity, and whether the trip is virtual or onsite. A retailer house cigar of 500–1,000 cigars is typically a five-figure project. A national soft launch of 2,500–5,000 cigars is mid-five to low-six figures. A full national launch of 10,000+ cigars is a six-figure project. Full cost breakdown →
Does The Cigar Mule charge for the discovery call?
No. The discovery call, initial scoping, and proposal are always free. We also won't charge you to talk you out of a project we don't think will work.
The trip.
How big are the Nicaragua cigar trips?
Trips are capped at 8 guests. That can be one retailer bringing seven team members, or eight separate retailers — any combination. Sharing a trip with other clients meaningfully reduces the per-person cost.
When should I avoid scheduling a Nicaragua cigar trip?
We recommend avoiding mid-May through end of August. Nicaragua's rainy season makes the field portions of the trip unreliable. We can still host you in those months if your calendar requires it.
How long is a typical trip?
Most run 4–6 days. Custom-built around your goals.
Where do I fly into for a Nicaragua cigar trip?
Managua (MGA) is the international airport. Internal transfers from Managua to Estelí (about 2 hours) are handled by The Cigar Mule.
Is Nicaragua safe for cigar tourism?
Nicaragua is a working country with a working cigar industry. The Mule has lived in Estelí since 2017 — every trip is escorted and locally hosted throughout. We go where it's safe and skip what isn't.
Do I need a visa?
US citizens get a 90-day tourist entry on arrival. Most other passports are similar — confirm during the discovery call.
About The Mule.
Who is The Mule?
Joe — known as The Mule — has 33 years in cigars. Started as a retailer behind the counter, worked as a brand representative, became a consultant, and has lived in Estelí, Nicaragua full-time since 2017 making cigars on the ground. Full founder bio →
Does The Mule own the factories?
No — and we're upfront about that. The Cigar Mule partners with three of Nicaragua's premier cigar factories and trusted band and packaging vendors. We pair each project with the partner that fits. Owning a factory wouldn't make us better — it would just make us less honest about which factory should roll which cigar.
Question not answered?
Ask it on the discovery call. The Mule writes back the same business day.
